Reasons Why Chewing Tobacco is No Better Than Smoking in Terms of Oral Health

Posted on 10/10/2018 by JJ Perkiomaki
Reasons Why Chewing Tobacco is No Better Than Smoking in Terms of Oral HealthSmoking is bad for you in general as it can cause cancer, but it also puts you at higher risk for several dental conditions including oral cancer, tooth decay, and tooth loss.

There are no two ways of looking at it, smoking is bad for your health, but many people think that inhaling is what hurts them and while this is true, chewing can be just as bad.

Why Chewing Tobacco is as Bad as Smoking

We encourage you to quit smoking or chewing tobacco to prevent severe disease from affecting your life. Whether you smoke or chew tobacco, you are not safe from its dangerous side effects.

Some of the reasons why chewing tobacco can be as bad as smoking are:

•  The most apparent reason is oral cancer. This disease can first develop as leukoplakia, a gray-white patch in the mouth that eventually becomes cancer. We cannot scrape these patches as is the case with some benign mouth sores.
•  Nicotine addiction is one of the most significant problems associated with chewing tobacco. This can require treatment for addiction which can be expensive and time-consuming. Data from the American Cancer society indicates there is an increase in the use of smokeless tobacco and cigarettes, called vaping, among American youth which is concerning because it carries unknown risks to their health.
•  Dissolvable tobacco, which unlike the chewable type, melts in your mouth is increasingly concerning to health authorities. This type of tobacco is particularly dangerous for young high schoolers who like to experiment with different substances. As with any other related product, it's made of nicotine and other harmful substances.

We urge you to seek help to stop smoking in any form and if you have kids that start smoking at a young age, you must seek help for them. Smoking is bad. Period.
