What is LANAP?

Posted on 11/20/2018 by JJ Perkiomaki
What is LANAP?Have we recommended a LANAP procedure, but you aren't exactly sure what it is? LANAP is a type of laser-assisted regeneration procedure that is thought to be less painful and more effective than conventional oral surgery.

Using a free-running, variable pulsed laser, this procedure can treat gum disease by targeting the source of the problem. Read on to learn more about LANAP.

What Happens during the Procedure?

The LANAP protocol is used in our dental office under local anesthesia in order to treat gum disease. A tiny laser is inserted between the gum and the tooth in order to clear away the disease and infection without cutting into the gums.

The tooth roots are cleaned of plaque and tartar, and a different laser setting can create a stable blood clot over the pocket. Our dentist will typically treat one half of the mouth at each session, and a follow-up appointment at a later date will finish the job.

What are the Benefits?

There are several reasons why we may want to employ LANAP in order to treat gum disease:

•  Pain relief. The use of this laser procedure is less painful both during the treatment and after. It doesn't require cutting or stitching of the gums.
•  Faster recovery. Most patients are able to resume their normal activities immediately after their dental appointments. Swelling and discomfort after the procedure tends to be minimal.
•  Reduce gum recession. When the gums are cut, the tissue may shrink and expose the tooth root. LANAP does not cut the gums, allowing the tissue to stay intact.

If you are living with gum disease and are exploring potential treatment options, please give our office a call. We can discuss LANAP and other treatments that could potentially save your teeth. We are here to help find the treatment option that is right for you.
