Dental Cleanings and Exams
Your dental hygiene appointment is performed by our trusted, licensed Dental Hygienist. At Jukka J. Perkiomaki, DMD, we recommend dental cleanings be performed a minimum of twice a year at our SW Portland dental office. The Center for Disease Control reported that 33% of Americans have untreated tooth decay. This is not beneficial to you and the lasting health of your teeth. Our hygienist will clean your teeth by removing plaque, tartar and surface stains.
Dental CleaningsUsing the latest diagnostic technology, we can see below the gumline and any hidden spots where decay may be present, allowing us to completely evaluate the status of your dental health. Based on our evaluation, treatment will include scaling with hand instruments and/or an electric scaler which is used with a water sprayer to loosen and remove plaque and tartar. This process may be mildly uncomfortable at the time, but we are removing bacteria that is harmful to your teeth. We may even sand and smooth the roots of your teeth. Finally, we brush your teeth with a rotary brush and gritty paste, this both polishes and cleans your teeth by removing surface stains. We will commonly floss your teeth and may offer a fluoride treatment for strength. Dental cleanings and examinations twice a year help you. Our patients save money, time, and pain, by catching problems early. With regular cleanings, we can help prevent cavities and periodontal disease.

Dental ExaminationsScheduling regular dental exams with Dr. Perkiomaki at our SW Portland dental office will help protect your oral health. By having dental exams, our dental team has an opportunity to detect any problems and provide advice on caring for your teeth. With consistent dental check-ups we can catch problems quickly, before they become worse. Too many patients ignore dental problems, and that does not make them go away, it only allows them to have time to get worse.
Your dental exam begins with our dental hygienist. She will first clean your teeth, removing tartar and plaque that has built up. Then Dr, Perkiomaki will identify any inflammation in the gum and evaluate your risk of developing cavities, bone loss, or anything that appears abnormal.
Our dental examinations generally include:
Knowing that lifestyle choices can effect your teeth, we may also include information about diet, smoking, and other lifestyle habits.
Deep Dental CleaningsOccasionally, our patients require more than a standard cleaning. At J.J. Perkiomaki DMD PC in SW Portland, we perform a non-surgical gum treatment when the periodontium, which is the foundation of teeth structure gums, ligaments, and bone is unhealthy. You can see signs of an unhealthy periodontium and gum disease. These signs include gums that are red and bleed easily, gums that are receding or pulling away from the teeth, consistently bad breath, loose or shifting teeth. There is a perception that it is normal to have gums bleed when you brush or floss, this is not true. This is a sign of a problem, but a problem that we can help with. Dr. Perkiomaki, along with his dental hygienist perform a deep cleaning.
A deep cleaning is a treatment we perform to help establish a healthy periodontium. We need to clean between the gums and teeth down to the root, where bacteria has reached and infected. This treatment may include root planing, scaling, local anesthetic, ultrasonic vibrations and antibiotics. Untreated gum disease may lead to more extensive surgeries or tooth extraction. Scaling is the process of removing the dangerous bacteria and calculus that has developed. Planing is the process of smoothing out your dental roots, making it less likely for plaque to accumulate on your roots in the future. Gum disease is never cured, simply maintained, and you want to maintain it to keep your healthy smile.
