A Toothache Combined with a Fever Spells Big Trouble

It is never a good thing when you have a toothache, but when a fever accompanies it, it could spell even more trouble. Temperature usually indicates the presence of an infection, and if your tooth hurts at the same time, the disease could be in that tooth. One of the most common reasons with a fever that accompanies a toothache is a tooth abscess. An abscess is a pocket of pus caused by a bacterial infection and is usually located in the root of the tooth (periapical abscess) or the gum line (periodontal abscess). To prevent a tooth abscess from spreading to adjacent teeth, our dentist can drain the area to eliminate the cause of the infection. Many times, you will need a root canal to save the tooth because the root has died, but in some instances, the tooth needs to be extracted. We cannot emphasize enough how important it is to treat this condition immediately to avoid complications. Symptoms of a Tooth AbscessThese are some of the most common symptoms of a tooth abscess: A fever that happens at the same time as a toothache is concerning and if you cannot reach us for whatever reason, you should go to urgent care or the emergency room. If the infection from a tooth abscess spreads to other areas of your jaw or neck it could be dangerous. The best way to avoid a tooth abscess is to take care of any kind of toothache as soon as possible. Pain or discomfort in your teeth is usually a sign that something is wrong, and we want you to prevent a tooth abscess at all cost.
