Dental Fillings
Portland - West Haven - Sylvan

When you have tooth decay, it is best to put a stop to it in order to save your natural tooth. The least invasive and most successful way to do this is with dental fillings. At Dr. Perkiomaki's office, we offer several options for filling a tooth, rather than just the standard amalgam fillings. Once the decay is gone and the tooth is filled, it can act like a normal tooth once again, allowing you to save your natural roots and the remaining portion of the tooth that was unaffected.

Types of Fillings

We offer a variety of fillings that enable you to choose the one that is the most pleasing to you. The standard amalgam fillings are the silver fillings that are most commonly used. We also offer gold and composite fillings. Composite is becoming the most popular choice today because it is typically tooth colored, which means it blends in with your other teeth, making the presence of tooth decay much less obvious.

Composite Fillings

Aside from the fact that composite fillings are the same color as your surrounding teeth, they offer more stability in your mouth. The resin material used for this type of filling can withstand more pressure than any other type of filling. It also requires very little tooth to be removed since the resin bonds to the tooth directly rather than filling a hole. The increase amount of your natural tooth that is saved combined with the durable resin enables you to chew hard foods that might otherwise chip or crack an amalgam filling.

Why Cavities must be Filled

Many people, especially parents of young children that still have baby teeth, think that it is okay to ignore a cavity, especially if the tooth is going to fall out eventually. Unfortunately, tooth decay does not stop spreading. Once it attacks the enamel of the tooth and makes its way down to the base, it continues to spread into the root of the tooth. When the root is affected, a more invasive procedure, such as a root canal might be necessary in order to clean the decay out of that area. If this is not successful, sometimes it is necessary to remove the tooth, which is not in the best interest of children or adults. Every tooth in your mouth has a function and should be saved whenever possible. Missing teeth can make it difficult to chew, affect your speech and even cause your other teeth to shift.

If you suspect that you have tooth decay, it is important to come in for an appointment right away. We will discuss your various options with you in order to properly fill the tooth and restore its natural function. We will provide the least invasive procedure possible in order to save your tooth. We will also discuss future oral hygiene and diet to help you prevent future decay from occurring in your mouth.
